Postnatal Care

If you decide to birth at Middlemore Hospital then following the birth of your baby you can transfer to Botany Maternity Unit directly from the Delivery unit. You are responsible for arranging your transport to Botany Maternity Unit. Generally the transfer takes place 2 - 4 hours after your baby is born. Alternatively you can choose to go straight home from the delivery unit after the birth. Whenever you travel with a baby in the car you are legally required to transport baby in an approved car seat.

Please ensure you either buy or hire a car seat before your baby is born.

Arrangements for postnatal stay are made in your antenatal period.

If you have a caesarean section, or you or your baby have complications requiring medical care you will stay at Middlemore Hospital. The average length of stay at Botany Maternity Unit and at Middlemore Hospital is 48 hours (2 days) for a normal birth and 5 days if you have had a caesarean section delivery.

I usually visit you daily while you are in hospital and then at home as often as is required. On average I visit you a minimum of 5-9 times at home prior to discharging you to a Well Child provider such as Plunket. This occurs at between 4-6 weeks after your baby is born.

When your baby is six weeks old he/she will need to see your GP for the 6 week baby check and immunisations and you make this appointment yourself to suit your schedule.
